Can anyone recommend a budget hotel in New York?

I'm heading to NY this September with my mum as a treat for turning 18 and finishing school. Anyway we're looking for ahotel that isn't completely horrible. We've only got a budget of $90/night and it has to have good access to the city. We need a room with two beds/one bed and a pullout.
Can anyone recommend anywhere or are we trying for the impossible?
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but the Edison hotel is saying that it's over $200 a night for two people. That's way out of my budget.

YES! I 2nd the Hotel Edison! It's PERFECT! and a super location! It's old-world, charming & slightly delapidated (unless they've rennovated). The hallways look newish, but our room was high ceilings, rough paint on the windowsills, a little rusty spot on the old-fashioned tub, but really quaint! My first impression was 'kinda yuck' but in hindsight, it was great! It has an on-site restaurant (Sophia's) with the most scrumptious breakfasts! , a cozy lounge/bar (The Rum House) -- nice for wind-down drink at the end of the day, IS RIGHT THERE & walking distance to theaters, shopping, subway, everything you'll need. AND is very reasonable $$.

I went w/ a very spoiled rotten friend who's used to the 'best' --has a famous plastic surgeon uncle on Park Ave., & it's the only place she stays unless her father pays---it's like second-home to her & reasonable, so she can spend her money on cabfare & shopping.

The room we stayed in was kinda below my normal standards, but some are remodeled & in NYC, WHO CARES? Just shower, get dressed & sleep there--then get outside to where everything is!.

EDIT: sorry if it's too high! I was there almost 10 years ago & it was one of the most reasonable at the time. I STILL hope you can find something w/in that general area because it was fun. You may not be able to find anything inner city for $90--you may have to be on the outskirts. If you are, do consider that you'll be paying cab-fare or bus or subway fare to get where you need to go, so it may pay off to put a little more into your hotel budget.
