Apply LIKE statement to entire table and compare to another table in mySQL?
I have two tables that I want to compare on partial matches using LIKE.
For example, in table 1 I might have:
hotels in california
hotels in miami
accommodation in new york
in table 2 I would just have a list of locations like:
new york
chicago
miami
california
I want to find out the locations from table 2 that are NOT mentioned in table 1. For the above example I would just like to get returned to me “chicago” since the other locations showed up in table 1.
Is there a way to apply LIKE to an entire column?

The solution does not need the like as in mySQL the locate function will help you:
select t.city
from table2 t
where city not in
(
select t2.city
from table1 t1, table2 t2
where locate(t2.city, t1.desc) != 0
)
But, I think there is a design problem in your table1: normally relational database are made for preventing data redundancy.
Because you have already a city table (table2) you need a “Type” (or another name you like) table which will contains two columns ID and name
ID, name
1, Accomodation
2, Hotels
3, Flat
and so on
After that if your table2 have also an primary key id, you will have just a middle table which contains id’s of both, the type and the city, (and perhaps you can put some description text for that, except city name or type name)
I don’t know what is your level of database design but i give a link which explain what is database normalisation and will explain
more clearly the usage of an intermediate table for many-to-many relationship.
