How safe is Garment District area in New York? (booked a hotel there)?
I've got a booking there, I'm staying with family and I took it cuz of the price and proximity to main attractions. Any idea? My hotel is Wyndham Garden Hotel Times Square South.
I walk past that hotel every week when I visit my parents who live there. I used to live there for over 20 years. I don't expect you to have any problems--there is an SRO type of hotel on the same block, and several small independent peformance theaters, even a steak house. But if you do, the police department's parking lot is RIGHT across the street. Just walk to 35th Street for the actual entrance to the precinct.
20, 25 years ago the area was a cr_p hole. It was horrible. But the place is considerably cleaned up (for New York) and is much safer than in the past.
The street itself gets a fair amount of traffic during the daytime, but is pretty quiet traffic wise during the weekend. Because it's the garment district, it is a commercial area and I hope they have soundproof windows, because the garbage trucks pick up in the wee hours of the morning. Every day.
Is it a dangerous place? No. Would I walk out at night as an unaccompanied woman dressed to impress? No. It's just common sense, don't go some place you aren't familiar with alone. Anytime I hear of violent crimes happening, it's because the woman is alone and riding the subway at 2 a.m.
Use common sense and you'll be fine.
