I wanted to live in New York City but i see its really expensive to find a decent place. How much less expensive is a decent place in New Jersey where it would be easy enough to commute to New York City? What is the average price of a decent apartment in New Jersey?

Can we book a decent hotel in New York City for under $1000 for a week?

We're a family of four (the kids are 5 and 2) and we're going in August for a week. There seem to be so many hotel booking websites to go to, just wondering if anyone has found any really good deals online (other than the main ones like expedia/travelocity and so on)
